AMSPA held business meeting with in-bound tour operators

AMSPA with the support of the Malaysian Association of Tour & Travel Agents (MATTA) and Malysian Association of Hotels (MAH) had a successful meeting on 18th of December 2008 at Kelab Darul Ehsan, Ampang Jaya. The event was attended by 42 guests and was a combination of speech & panel speaking as well as booth display.

AMSPA President Datin Ramona Sulieman took the opportunity to highlight the challenges faced by the Spa Industry in Malaysia. One of these challenges is employment with the freeze on application for foreign therapist and the shortage of local manpower. Another challenge is the perception of the spa as a social ill by the older generation. And lastly, the lack of standardisation of regulation of spa establishments and their services and treatments.

Mark Lee of Hot Shoes gave pointers on how AMSPA can grow as MATTA did. He suggested that the association organise events and promotions and enlist the involvement of the entire industry. This could attract tourists and at the same time, provide a platform for locals to explore the elements of spas. He also provided statistics on European tourists in Malaysia and indicated that the numbers are rising and the spa industry needs to be more pro-active to capture this market.

Phua Tai Neng, COO of MATTA pointed out that support from the locals as well as the government was very important in reaching any tourist market. A spa package for tourists must also come with a good country image and service. He suggested that AMSPA should also organise spa trips for travel agents to help them fully understand what they will be promoting when they sell the spa packages.

TSPA started monitoring of in-house cascade training

On 22 December 2008, the 1st spa training inspection was conducted by Nissara Hamloha, TSPA project coordinator, at Six Senses Spa, Hua Hin, Thailand. The training was conducted from 9.00-17.00 hrs by Suwan Jantinmathorn and the subject was Anatomy and Physiology.

The project coordinator requested some documentation from the trainer that included the registration form, training schedule and other training documents.
